Sia Kyriakakos - your candidate for congress

“In Congress, I will fight for our civil rights which include voting for a world-class education system, public safety, economic prosperity, and reproductive rights.”

About Sia

The child of Greek immigrants, Sia Kyriakakos, an artist, activist, and community leader, has taught for the past 13 years in the Baltimore City public schools and in 2017 was named the Maryland State Teacher of the Year. In this role and as a finalist for the National Teacher of the Year, Kyriakakos has worked tirelessly at the local, state, and national levels to build communities and to dismantle the social and economic inequities that are woven into our society.

As a first generation American, Kyriakakos is used to challenging the status quo and working as an outsider while still fostering valuable relationships. All these experiences have prepared her to be the first Democratic woman to represent Maryland’s newly formed 2nd Congressional District.

“In Congress, I will fight for our civil rights which include voting for a world-class education system, public safety, economic prosperity, and reproductive rights.”

“Sia is not afraid to hustle, to be creative in finding solutions, not afraid to roll up her sleeves and do what is needed for the people of Maryland.”

humble Beginnings

Sia Kyriakakos is a nationally recognized educator, world renowned artist, and community builder.

Born to Greek immigrants, Sia worked by her parents’ side, serving pizza before she could even see the tops of the red checkered tables. Mamma Mia’s was located in the shadows of Johns Hopkins in one of Baltimore’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods. Even though her relatives worked 18 hour shifts, there was joy and laughter along with the sweat and sacrifice. She learned in that space that very different people could come together to share a meal and it was possible to find common ground even if they had nothing in common before.

Since then Sia has spent her entire life bringing people together and building community. This was the focus of her art career, the focus of her teaching, and it will be her focus when she is the Representative of Maryland’s Second Congressional District.

Excellence in Action

As the recipient of three Fulbrights, a National Teacher of the Year nominee, and as Maryland’s 2017 State Teacher of the Year, Sia Kyriakakos has developed a global perspective that helped her understand that we all want the same things – a safe home, food on the table, good healthcare, and to ensure our civil rights are protected. This is what democracy is all about. Sia traveled the United States and other countries, immersing herself in education policy discussions with stakeholders at every level. Through those conversations she realized that the best way that she could bring about real changes in education, for our families, and our future, wasn’t in her classroom but through service at the national level.

Sia is not afraid to hustle, to be creative in finding solutions, not afraid to roll up her sleeves and do what is needed for the people of Maryland. She is a political outsider running a grassroots campaign, and when elected will be leaving her classroom, a place she loves, to protect those same families and their future, representing them in Congress.

Engaging to Make a Difference

At the state level Kyriakakos served on the external stakeholder committee implementing the Every Student Succeeds Act, advocating for a cohesive K-12 arts education program. On the Baltimore City Public Schools’ curriculum writing committee she focused on creating an inclusive and culturally sensitive curriculum, and as the chair of the School Family Council at Mergenthaler Vocational Technical High School, she engages community members in order to build the supports needed for our kids to have opportunities to succeed.

“In Congress, I will fight for our civil rights, including a world-class education because your zip code should not determine your future; public safety, as everyone should feel secure in their own community; economic prosperity because in the wealthiest nation in the world too many of our citizens live paycheck to paycheck; and reproductive rights for all because a woman’s health is a woman’s choice.”
